The trees and shrubs around us are extremely important and have always been necessary for improving our well being and adding value to our homes and property.  It is not a stretch to believe or state that without trees, humans would not exist on this beautiful planet.  Here is the short list of why trees in particular are necessary for improving and maintaining our precious environment.

The Value of Trees to a Community

Tree pic_2Trees produce oxygen – A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as several people inhale in a year.  “One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people.” U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Trees clean the soil – Trees can either store harmful pollutants or actually change the pollutant into less harmful forms. Trees filter sewage and farm chemicals, reduce the effects of animal wastes, clean roadside spills and clean water runoff into streams.

Trees control noise pollution – Trees muffle urban noise and planted strategically around your home and neighborhood can abate major noises from freeways, roadways, industry and airports.

Trees slow storm water runoff and erosion – Underground water holding aquifers are recharged when surface water runoff is slowed.  “The planting of trees means improved water quality, resulting in less runoff and erosion. This allows more recharging of the ground water supply. Wooded areas help prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams.” USDA Forest Service.

Trees are carbon sinks – Trees absorb and lock up carbon dioxide in the wood, leaves and roots.  When this occurs the carbon is not available as a greenhouse gas.  “There are about 60– to 200-million spaces along our city streets where trees could be planted. This translates to the potential to absorb 33 million more tons of CO2 every year, and saving $4 billion in energy costs.” National Wildlife Federation

Trees clean the air – Trees help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing many different pollutants. Trees remove air pollution by lowering air temperature, through respiration, and by retaining particulates.

Trees shade, cool and act as windbreaks – Shade from trees reduces the need for air conditioning in summer.  In winter, trees break the force of winter winds, lowering heating costs. “The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.” U.S. Department of Agriculture. “ Trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent and can save 20–50 percent in energy used for heating.” USDA Forest Service

Trees increase property value – Real estate values increase when trees beautify a property or neighborhood.  “Landscaping, especially with trees, can increase property values as much as 20 percent.” Management Information Services/ICMA. “ In one study, 83% of realtors believe that mature trees have a ‘strong or moderate impact’ on the salability of homes listed for under $150,000; on homes over $250,000, this perception increases to 98%.” Arbor National Mortgage & American Forests

“Nationally, the 60 million street trees have an average value of $525 per tree.” Management Information Services

“In laboratory research, visual exposure to settings with trees has produced significant recovery from stress within five minutes, as indicated by changes in blood pressure and muscle tension.” Dr. Roger S. Ulrich Texas A&M University.

Tree Trimming

BECKS Lawn, Landscape and Fence performs tree pruning throughout all months of the year.  However, some tree species will need to be pruned at different times of the year. Please call and we will work with you to determine the best time to perform this service, especially Ash, Oak and Maple.

Shrub Trimming

BECKS Lawn, Landscape and Fence performs summer shrub trimming from May through June, after spring growth is mostly complete.  Spring-flowering shrubs are pruned within one month after they bloom to preserve flowers for the next year.

Fall shrub trimming is typically performed from September through October where shrubs will be trimmed and topped as necessary to maintain a clean appearance. Major cutting-back of shrubs is done early in the winter months or early spring. Our trimming equipment is continually sharpened and adjusted to provide plants with the best cut possible. The key benefits of having your shrubs professionally trimmed are:

  • Nicely trimmed shrubs compliment the overall appearance of your property
  • Professional pruning helps protect your investment
  • Frequent trimming extends the life of foundation plantings
